It takes another hour to finish dealing with the body, and there will be more work to do tomorrow. Not only do we have to dig a hole for the dead son of a bitch, we’ve got to process all this and come up with some kind of plan for retribution and safety.

By now every member of the club knows that a Razorback openly tried to assassinate me on our turf, likely to get back at us for torching their meth operation and for the brawl on the road a couple months ago. Everybody knows to take extra precautions and not to travel alone. But it’s going to take more than that to secure our safety in the long term.

Right now, though, I’m too distraught over Ashley to think about any of that. I want a drink. I want many drinks. I want to forget that I care about her and that I did her wrong.

By the time me and Tommy walk into the clubhouse, it’s after midnight and the place is empty except for the two of us, Callie behind the bar, and Wrecker.

I take a seat on a bar stool far away from Wrecker and the jukebox, where I know Tommy will post up. He already knows I’m not in a talking mood, anyway. And Wrecker must pick up on that fact from the look on my face, because he only gives me a quick grunt in greeting as I pass.

But Callie has never let one of my moods stop her before and she doesn’t now, either. Especially not after getting a good look at my face.

“What happened to you? Is that a handprint?”

I roll my eyes. “Pilsner. And a shot of a Jameson. A double shot, actually.”

She arches an eyebrow at me. “Did that librarian chick slap you? I’m surprised she had it in her. You might actually have a shiner in the morning.”

“Get me something to drink, please. I had a horrible night. I almost died,” I say, wanting more sympathy from my friend.

“Yeah, I heard about the attack,” she says. “I’m glad that you’re okay. Was the girl hurt?”

“Callie, for fuck’s sake. Please.”

She grumbles as she rustles up a pint of beer, then pours the whiskey into a shot glass. And then she watches me as I throw back the shot and wash it down with several enormous gulps of beer.

“I’ll take another,” I say, tapping the glass.

“The night really messed you up, huh?”

“You have no idea,” I say, taking another sip. “Although you were right about one thing. Ashley, the librarian chick—I should have told her what I was all about before. She found out tonight under less-than-optimal circumstances. I’m not sure she’ll ever speak to me again.”

“Oh.” Callie’s perfect eyebrows scrunch. Lowering her voice, she asks, “What exactly do you mean by ‘less than optimal’?”

“Like I was attacked at her house,” I explain. “And then...well, we had to convince her not to tell anybody about what happened.”

“How did you do that?”

“It’s club business,” I say.
